Throughout our lifetime, we are lucky to find a person whom we can count on through thick and thin, through life’s ups and downs, laughter, and pain. You call them your ‘best friend,’ Indeed difficult to find, but once you do, you know that the friendship you have for this person is meant to last.
Kaden Mancilla and Eban McKenzie are two best friends from Norwalk Middle School. No one expected that through a near-death experience that caused one to save the life of the other would strengthen the bond they have.
It was an ordinary day for both teenagers. The two were cracking up jokes in the cafeteria. Eban mentioned something extremely funny that made Kaden burst into laughter. Unfortunately, he was eating a carrot that made him choke, gasping for air.
Eban recalled that on impulse, his initial reaction was to help save his friend right away.
“He had his hand over his throat just coughing and coughing. Everybody has the general sense of knowing what to do, but I didn’t really know how to properly actually do it, but I tried the best I could,”
Although he wasn’t trained properly when it comes to first-aid, he did the best he could.
“It kind of just happened. I didn’t panic. I just thought, ‘Well, he’s choking,’ and got up and just did it,” he added further.
Luckily, Kaden was saved and has nothing but gratitude for his best friend for saving his life.
The news later spread about Eban’s brave and heroic act, but he quickly dismisses it, saying it was simply the right thing to do at that moment…to save your best friend’s life.
