This mother’s letter to her 5-year old daughter is making rounds online for its heartfelt message and inspiring content.
Toni Hammer, a blogger who lives in Portland, recently posted these powerful letters on Facebook. The content ranges from simple words a normal mother would say, like “Don’t apologize when someone else bumps into you,” to a more deeper, much more poignant reminder: ‘Don’t say ‘sorry to be such a pain.’ You’re not a pain. You’re a person with thoughts and feelings who deserves respect. Don’t makeup reasons as to why you can’t go out with a guy you don’t wanna go out with. You don’t owe anyone an explanation.”
Hammer says that this advice stemmed from her own experience back then when she was picked on as a kid about the same age of her daughter. She wanted her child to gain confidence growing up and to never feel she is ever ‘less than enough.’
“I want to raise a daughter who is as confident as she is kind, who fights for those who can’t fight for themselves, who isn’t afraid to speak her mind and work hard to make the world a better place. Someone who is a lover of justice and believes change can happen.”
