It was almost twelve years ago when David Deutchman was just coming out of the hospital due to an injury he suffered while running. He met a few people, most of them mothers, and at that moment Deutchman realized he wanted to make a connection between both parents and children being treated in the hospital. Starting that day, he’s been doing volunteer work comforting parents as well as cradling babies in the local hospital.

“It is very gratifying, not just because the babies are crying and you help them to stop crying, there are a lot of benefits to that warm connection of being held—when a baby puts their face against your heartbeat, there’s a benefit there. I came to love it, but not just because of the connection with the babies, but the whole atmosphere of the hospital,” David said in an interview with the Daily.

Deutchman retired from his job 15 years ago in international business marketing and according to him, he never found it satisfying compared to the volunteer work he’s doing now in the pediatric and neonatal care units of the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Hospital.
