If you’re a fan of the middle ages and its architecture then you’re in luck. Guedelon Castle in Burgundy, France will take you on a time-machine to what it was like to live in an authentic 13th-century castle.
Back in 1997, Michel Guyot and Maryline Martin started the Gueldon Castle project. 20 years later, it has attracted over 300,000 visitors every year. This said castle is built using only medieval building techniques and materials. Even through the construction of the castle itself, the workers there used side-carts and horse-drawn carriages to get from one point to another.
What’s amazing is that if you want to visit the castle and work, you are very welcome to do so! Almost a stunning number of 650 each year volunteer for a couple of days to pitch in and work.
Workers are also re-building a couple of buildings and homes there that are actually used in real life.
Technically, in the annals of Guedelon, it all began in 1228. Now, more than twenty years have passed since the project started and it is now in the year 1248.
Amazing, isn’t it?
