The Real Life ‘Up’: Tied To A Chair With 100 Helium Balloons, Man Flies Across South Africa

An adventure company in Bristol, England recently thought of the unthinkable – to recreate the 2009 Pixar movie Up by flying 8,000 feet above the ground with colorful party balloons.

“It’s going to be a three-day, long distance, floating adventure under party balloons on a chair… probably the silliest air race,” founder Tom Morgan recently said on the company’s Facebook page.

Known as The Adventurists, they offer unusual holidays to people seeking the most extraordinary experiences. They’re known for their past projects like having a motorbike race on the largest frozen lake in the world in Russia and a rickshaw running through the Himalayas.

All of these are for charity, and for the 12 years, they were able to raise £5 million.

To ensure the safety of guests, Morgan and his team did a test run, flying to Botswana after two months of planning.

Recalling the experience, he said it was a fairly indescribable feeling.  “Wafting across Africa on a cheap camping chair dangling from a load of balloons.” He also said he felt elated and terrified at the same time.

Matthew Dickens, The Adventurists’ event manager, said their team wasn’t even sure if Tom would come back alive. But then, he still managed to pull through and return back to safety in the end.

Thrill-seekers can book an unforgettable Up experience with this company.
