As Early As First Grade, Japanese Kids Commute To School By Themselves

All over the world, many kids are dropped to school every day by their parents with Japanese branded cars that are giants in the car industry- Honda, Suzuki, Mitsubishi, Toyota, Mazda and the long list goes on. But the funny thing is, do you actually know that a large population of children in Japan actually go to schools on their own, as early as first-grade?

A typical Japanese kid’s daily commute would start from walking several minutes from their respective homes to the nearest train station to reach their schools. This would last an hour or so every day.

One host in CBS Morning followed a young Japanese boy in school. This was broadcasted all over television and social media. It also showed other students, commuting to school by themselves.

In their culture, by the time these kids can go to school they are expected to know the route by heart and commute on their own.

It’s indeed unusual in the eyes of a foreigner, but for the Japanese- it is just like any other daily occurrence. This is due to the fact that the crime rate in the country is very low, as well as trains always arrive on time, and citizens are expected to look out for the welfare of these kids.
